Here are a few character designs that I made for an Urban Legend game brief.
The game involved the player working in a mysterious Facility that kept all the cryptids of the world under lock and key.
Below are descriptions of characters present in The Facility starting with the player controlled character and moving on to describe a few of the subjects themselves.
Barring the player character, all other descriptions are written from the perspective of the Interns supervisor. This allows them to provide both gameplay tips and world building as the off-hand manner the supervisor takes when describing the supernatural residents will keep the player guessing about the true intent of The Facility and it’s bureaucracy.
The Intern:
This is the character the player will control in game.
They wear a full body hazmat suit in order to protect themselves from the creatures and objects contained in the facility, in reality it won’t offer much in the way of protection, but it does mean a lot less paperwork for the higher ups should an unfortunate accident happen.
Characteristics:
Excited to see what the canteen food is like.
Fresh out of college.
Eager to please their supervisor.
The Jersey Devil:
One of the more bestial creatures held in the facility. Half-goat and half-bat, this creature terrorised the residents of the Pine Barrens in New Jersey before being captured and quarantined by The Facility.
Subject Characteristics:
Emits piercing cry when in distress.
Sharp talons and hooves capable of brutal strikes.
Fond of Mozart or Vanilla Ice (whichever is available).
Quarantine Conditions:
The creature is kept in a facsimile of the Pine Barrens and seems quite happy to roam and hunt wild animals (released at regular intervals by staff) but seems to suffer from loneliness and a member of staff will need to assist in calming the creature at night by scratching the top of its head and playing music over the enclosures internal speakers.
The Gentleman Vampire:
This subject is one of the more amicable, if morose, of the residents at The Facility. Before being turned into a vampire the subject was in fact a prolific actor and holds his manners in high regard. When The Facility intercepted the subject he came willingly.
Subject Characteristics:
Always wears a tuxedo (supplied by The Facility as a show of good faith).
Enjoys spirited conversation about many topics.
Appreciates a shot of bourbon in his midnight blood pack.
Quarantine Conditions:
Extra care is afforded to the more sentient residents of The Facility as it helps keep the peace. As such this subject is kept in a replica of a 1920s speakeasy (by their request). Handlers should still use caution around The Gentleman as his strength is that of 20 men and things could turn deadly on a whim. You may enjoy a drink while talking with The Gentleman but be aware that the bar is under constant surveillance by your superiors and you will be billed for any alcoholic beverages consumed on the premise.
The Thing in the Box:
This subject remains a mystery to the researchers at The Facility and as such is under constant scrutiny. Removed from the backroom of a Scottish post office this cardboard box is home to some entity that reacts violently to any attempts to remove the box.
Subject Characteristics:
On occasion gazes warily from a hole in the side of the box.
Will put up with experimentation as long as the box is not removed.
Subject has a fondness for the Scottish beverage, Irn-Bru.
Quarantine Conditions:
This subject is held directly in laboratory conditions for further experimentation. Handlers will be tasked with introducing foreign objects to the subject and recording the results.
The Lucha Frog:
This subject is certainly a peculiar one. Discovered in a back alley lucha libre (Mexican Wrestling) outfit in Tijuana, the Subject was used as a draw for the crowds and treated badly. This forced the hand of The Facility and agents were sent out to re-educate the crowds before any news spread.
Subject Characteristics:
Capable of amazing acrobatic and athletic feats.
Watches Wrestlemania re-runs when not training.
Likes to eat trash.
Quarantine Conditions:
The subject lives in a fully functioning wrestling gym complete with modest living quarters. Handlers must be able bodied enough to spar with the subject and be willing to watch the WWE network for what will seem like an unhealthy length of time. A passion for professional wrestling is preferred but withstanding the smell of trash is a must.
