Sensory Jam Post Mortem

In this piece I'm going to talk about a submission my team and I made for a sensory game jam.

The premise of the jam was to create a game that used the senses in some way and to place it within the context of Scotland's history with the sugar industry.

My team was comprised of Emelie Edholm, Anthony Keyes, Ryan Goward and myself.

The sense we chose to target was smell as it is linked closest to memory.

We decided to use Twine to help tell the story of our game. We also chose it as we could make the game easily adaptable for a museum environment. I was the only member of the team that had used Twine before so I helped everyone get to grips with setting up the links between sections.

We acquired scent cubes, each tied to a different historical eras and placed them inside boxes that were attached to a Makey Makey via copper tape, when the player smelled the cube and touched their nose to the copper tape it would take them to that memory in the game.

The eras we decided to explore were the 1800s, 1940s, 1980s and the modern day.

I worked on the 1940s section which concerned the bombing of a sugar refinery in Greenock during WWII. I decided to write the section from the perspective of a young school boy as we wanted to have some generational variation in the games protagonists. I also sourced the audio that we used to set the scene for each section of the game.

We then showcased the game with the other teams and received a lot of positive feedback on our game.

I enjoyed working with the team and am proud of the game that we made.
